Historic Renovation

Rialto Theater

Tacoma, Washington

Originally opened in 1918 as part of a national movie house chain, this Beaux-Arts style Rialto Theater was designed in the style of Vienna's 1916 Redoutensaal, the first "shoe box" shaped orchestral hall.  By the 1990s, when Tacoma and the Broadway Theater District took on the task of restoring the Rialto, it had become a run-down, second-run discount movie house.  Rushforth Taylor was honored to be hired for the task of restoring this civic jewel, although its comprehensive and total renovation presented a number of very complex, very schedule-oriented challenges. Our team's involvement began in the schematic and budget phase, and by the time construction was complete, we had met every challenge, including the opening night date—which was planned one year in advance with no flexibility in the schedule.
